The Prophet (P.B.U.H): A Model Of Forgiveness

Qur’an on Forgiveness

“Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

(Surah An-Nur 24:22)

 Explanation:

  • Allah teaches believers to forgive others just as we desire His forgiveness.
  • Forgiveness is not weakness; it’s a divine strength that purifies the heart.

Hadith on Forgiveness – The Conquest of Makkah

Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) reported:

When the Prophet (P.B.U.H)  entered Makkah as a victor, he said to the Quraysh who once persecuted him:
“What do you think I will do with you?”

They replied, “You are a noble brother and the son of a noble brother.”

The Prophet (P.B.U.H)  said:

“Go, for you are free.”

(Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi, 18055 | Seerah Accounts)

Meaning:

  • Instead of revenge, he chose mercy.
  • The very people who mocked, hurt, and exiled him were forgiven in one sentence.
  • This act of compassion opened their hearts to Islam.

 Lessons from the Prophet’s Forgiveness

  • Mercy Over Revenge
  • At the height of power, he forgave when others expected punishment.
  • Forgiveness Heals Communities
  • His mercy united enemies and created peace.
  • Forgiveness Reflects Faith
  • Believers forgive not because people deserve it, but because Allah loves it.

 Psychological Connection

  • Holding grudges increases stress, bitterness, and anxiety.
  • Forgiveness reduces emotional burden and brings inner peace.
  • The Prophet (P.B.U.H) demonstrated emotional intelligence centuries before psychology emphasized it.

 Real-Life Reflection

  • Family Issues: If hurt by relatives, forgive for your own peace and Allah’s reward.
  • Workplace Conflicts: Let go of grudges; focus on progress, not revenge.
  • Friendship Breakdowns: Forgiveness restores relationships and frees the heart.

Takeaway for Life

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) showed that the strongest person is not the one who conquers cities but the one who conquers their own anger.
