Walking with Humility and Speaking Gently

Walking with Humility and Speaking Gently

Humility is often visible in ordinary behaviour: how a person walks into a room, listens to others, responds to correction, and controls the volume of their voice. It does not require weakness or silence. It means carrying dignity without treating other people as inferior.

Luqman’s Advice Against Pride

In the Quran, Luqman advises his son: “And do not turn your nose up to people, nor walk pridefully upon the earth.” (Quran 31:18)

This guidance addresses both attitude and outward behaviour. Pride may appear through dismissive expressions, refusing to listen, demanding special treatment, or making another person feel unimportant. Humility begins by noticing these habits honestly.

Walk with Moderation and Lower the Voice

The next verse says: “Be moderate in your pace. And lower your voice.” (Quran 31:19)

Moderation brings calmness to a person’s presence. Lowering the voice does not mean speaking so quietly that others cannot understand. It means avoiding needless harshness, shouting, and using volume to dominate a conversation.

Give People Your Full Attention

Turning toward someone, allowing them to finish, and asking a sincere question communicates respect. Avoid looking at the phone during an important conversation or preparing a reply while the other person is still explaining.

Listening does not require agreeing with every opinion. It allows a disagreement to be understood accurately and answered without contempt.

Choose Calm Speech During Disagreement

A raised voice can turn a manageable issue into a personal conflict. Slow down, use clear sentences, and discuss the action or decision rather than attacking the person’s character. If emotions are too strong, request a pause and return when calm.

Humility also makes room for correction. When evidence shows that we are mistaken, a simple acknowledgement protects trust more effectively than excuses or blame.

Avoid Performing Humility for Praise

True humility is not speaking badly about oneself so that others will offer compliments. It is recognising abilities without arrogance, accepting limitations without despair, and remembering that every person deserves basic respect.

Do useful work without needing to announce every contribution. Share credit, thank those who helped, and let another person’s success bring encouragement rather than resentment.

Practise Humility in Daily Spaces

At home, respond gently when interrupted and include quieter family members in decisions. At work, do not treat support staff as less worthy of courtesy. In the mosque, avoid competing for attention or correcting someone publicly when a private and gentle approach would be better.

Online communication also reveals character. Before posting, ask whether the wording is necessary, accurate, and respectful. A screen should not become permission for mockery or humiliation.

Conclusion

Luqman’s advice connects humility with the way we face people, move through the world, and use our voice. Walk without pride, listen with attention, and speak firmly without harshness. These small choices make dignity and good character visible every day.
