Pride can appear quietly. It may show itself when correction feels unbearable, when another person’s contribution is dismissed, or when status becomes a reason to look down on people. Prophetic guidance identifies pride by its effect on truth and human dignity.
The Prophetic Definition of Pride
Abdullah ibn Masud reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned about pride. When someone mentioned liking fine clothes and shoes, the Prophet explained that Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty, then said: “Pride is disdaining the truth and contempt for the people.” (Sahih Muslim 91a)
The hadith separates clean appearance and lawful beauty from arrogance. Pride is not simply owning something attractive. Its danger appears when self-importance makes a person reject what is true or treat people as beneath respect.
Learn to Accept Truth From Others
Truth does not become less true because it comes from someone younger, poorer, less educated, or outside our usual circle. A humble person examines the evidence instead of attacking the speaker. If a correction is accurate, accepting it protects both knowledge and character.
Pause when defensiveness rises. Ask whether the objection is about facts or only about wounded pride. Request clarification calmly, check reliable evidence, and thank the person when they have helped. Admitting a mistake may feel difficult, but it prevents a small error from becoming a larger injustice.
Respect People Without Ranking Their Worth
Contempt may be expressed through mockery, dismissive gestures, exclusion, rude service, or speaking as though another person’s time has no value. Muslim character requires dignity in dealings with family members, workers, neighbours, students, elders, children, and strangers.
Respect does not mean agreeing with every opinion or ignoring wrongdoing. It means correcting fairly, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and refusing humiliation. A firm response can still be accurate, proportionate, and free from personal contempt.
Notice the Everyday Signs of Pride
Watch for the need to win every discussion, reluctance to apologise, anger when someone else is praised, or the habit of mentioning status and achievements. These signs do not require public confession, but they do require honest repentance and deliberate correction.
Practise listening without interruption. Give credit openly. Ask sincere questions from people with useful knowledge. Perform some good deeds privately. Remember that every ability, opportunity, and possession is a gift from Allah and a responsibility rather than proof of personal superiority.
Beauty With Gratitude, Not Vanity
The hadith shows that appreciating beauty is not itself pride. Wear clean and lawful clothing, care for belongings, and present yourself respectfully, while avoiding waste, display, and comparison. Gratitude says, “This is a blessing from Allah.” Vanity says, “This makes me better than others.”
Conclusion
Sahih Muslim 91a gives a practical test for pride: do we accept truth, and do we respect people? Protect the heart by welcoming accurate correction, apologising when wrong, speaking without contempt, and treating blessings as trusts. Humility is not denying every strength; it is using strengths without rejecting truth or diminishing others.
