Protecting Good Deeds by Respecting the Rights of Other People

Protecting Good Deeds by Respecting the Rights of Other People

Worship and good deeds must be accompanied by justice toward people. A person may pray, fast, and give charity, yet still cause serious harm through abusive words, false accusations, unlawful use of wealth, or physical wrongdoing. Sahih Muslim 2581 gives a powerful warning about arriving in the Hereafter with acts of worship while owing unresolved rights to others.

Understand the Prophetic Warning About True Loss

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked his Companions, “Do you know who is poor?” They described poverty as having no money or possessions. He then explained that a person from his community may come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting, and zakat, but also with a record of abusing, falsely accusing, taking wealth from, shedding the blood of, or beating others.

Sahih Muslim 2581 states that the harmed people will receive from that person’s good deeds. If those deeds are exhausted before the claims are settled, the sins of the harmed people will be placed upon the wrongdoer. The hadith shows that worship cannot be used to make oppression insignificant.

Guard People From Harmful Speech

Insults and false accusations are not harmless because they use no physical force. They can damage honour, families, work, and community trust. Before repeating a claim, verify it. Before speaking in anger, consider whether the words are true, necessary, and fair.

If you have spread something false or abusive, stop repeating it, correct the claim where appropriate, and seek a responsible way to repair the harm. Do not turn an apology into another attack.

Respect Wealth and Property

Money, goods, wages, debts, business payments, and shared property carry rights. Do not delay what is due without a valid reason, hide defects in a transaction, use entrusted funds for yourself, or take advantage of someone who cannot easily challenge you.

Review outstanding debts and commitments. Keep clear records, communicate honestly, and return property promptly. If repayment is genuinely difficult, speak truthfully and propose a realistic plan rather than disappearing or making promises you cannot keep.

Reject Physical Harm and Intimidation

The hadith also names bloodshed and beating. Anger, authority, family position, or financial power does not make unlawful physical harm acceptable. Step away from escalating situations and seek responsible help when safety is at risk.

A harmed person should not be pressured to remain silent. Appropriate medical, legal, safeguarding, scholarly, or community support may be necessary according to the situation.

Repair Wrongs Before They Grow

Begin with an honest inventory. Is there someone you insulted, falsely accused, underpaid, deceived, threatened, or harmed? Stop the wrongdoing first. Then return what is owed, correct false information, apologise sincerely, and obtain qualified guidance when repairing the matter is complicated.

Repair must not create additional harm. In sensitive cases, especially those involving safety, abuse, or legal rights, use a trustworthy and appropriate process rather than forcing direct contact.

Let Worship Improve Your Treatment of Others

Prayer, fasting, and charity should strengthen accountability, not become a shield against it. Review your conduct alongside your acts of worship. Ask whether your family, colleagues, workers, customers, neighbours, and community members are safe from your words, decisions, and use of power.

Conclusion

Sahih Muslim 2581 warns that acts of worship do not cancel the rights of people who have been harmed. Careful speech, honest handling of wealth, rejection of violence, sincere repair, and responsible accountability protect both relationships and good deeds. A believer should prepare for the Hereafter by worshipping Allah and treating His creation justly.
