Listening Carefully and Following the Best Guidance With Discernment

Listening Carefully and Following the Best Guidance With Discernment

Modern life surrounds us with advice, opinions, short clips, forwarded messages, and confident claims. A believer needs more than the ability to hear; we need the discipline to listen carefully and follow what is best. Quran 39:18 praises people who listen to what is said, follow the best of it, and use sound reason.

Listen Before Reacting

Allah describes His guided servants as those “who listen to what is said and follow the best of it” (Quran 39:18). The verse joins listening with action. It does not praise collecting endless information while remaining unchanged.

Careful listening begins by slowing down. Allow the speaker to complete the thought, notice the evidence being offered, and separate the main point from emotion or presentation. An immediate reply is not always the wisest reply.

Distinguish Truth From Confidence

A confident voice, attractive design, or large audience does not make a claim reliable. When religious guidance is involved, check the original Quran verse or hadith page and confirm the wording and reference. Ask a trustworthy scholar when interpretation or a personal ruling is needed.

Avoid forwarding a reminder simply because its message sounds beautiful. Good intentions do not correct a false quotation or inaccurate attribution.

Compare Advice With Clear Principles

Different people may offer conflicting suggestions about family, work, worship, or personal growth. Write down the actual options and consider which one is truthful, lawful, beneficial, and realistic. Do not choose only what flatters your preference or protects your pride.

Following the best guidance may require changing a familiar habit. Reason is useful when it helps the heart accept truth rather than invent excuses to avoid it.

Ask Questions With Respect

Thoughtful questions can reveal missing facts and prevent misunderstanding. Ask what a statement means, where the evidence comes from, and whether it applies to the present situation. Keep the tone sincere rather than trying to embarrass the speaker.

If a discussion becomes heated, pause and return after checking the facts. Discernment grows in a calm mind more easily than in a contest to answer first.

Turn the Best Guidance Into Action

After identifying what is best, choose one clear action. Correct the mistaken information you shared, change the harmful habit, complete the neglected duty, or seek qualified help. A useful lesson should leave a visible improvement.

Review the result later. If the action was misunderstood or poorly applied, correct it with humility. Following guidance includes remaining teachable.

Conclusion

Quran 39:18 connects careful listening, sound reason, and practical obedience. Slow down, verify claims, ask respectful questions, and resist choosing only what is convenient. The wise listener does not merely hear many voices; the wise listener recognises what is best and follows it.
