Understanding Allah’s Perfect Oneness in Surah Al-Ikhlas

Understanding Allah’s Perfect Oneness in Surah Al-Ikhlas

Surah Al-Ikhlas is brief, yet its four verses give a clear foundation for knowing Allah correctly. It declares His perfect oneness, His complete self-sufficiency, and His freedom from every comparison and human family relationship. Reflecting on this surah strengthens worship, dependence, and sincerity.

Allah Is One and Indivisible

Surah Al-Ikhlas begins: “He is Allah—One ˹and Indivisible˺” (Quran 112:1). Allah is not one member of a group and does not share His divinity. Worship, ultimate reliance, and devotion belong to Him alone.

This belief gives direction to the heart. Instead of dividing worship between created things, the believer turns to the single Creator with sincerity.

Allah Is the Sustainer Needed by All

The second verse describes Allah as “the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺” (Quran 112:2). Every created being has needs, while Allah is not dependent on creation. Our health, provision, strength, and opportunities remain gifts under His control.

Recognising this truth should reduce pride. Ability is not self-created, and success is not independent of Allah. We use lawful means, ask Him for help, and thank Him for every benefit.

Allah Has No Offspring and Was Not Born

The third verse states that Allah has never had offspring and was not born (Quran 112:3). Birth, ancestry, and descendants belong to created life. Allah is eternally free from these needs and relationships.

Muslims therefore speak about Allah using what He revealed, without transferring human limitations to Him. Respectful belief avoids invented family descriptions or stories about the Divine.

Nothing Is Comparable to Allah

The surah concludes that none is comparable to Allah (Quran 112:4). Created strength, knowledge, beauty, and mercy are limited. Allah cannot be measured by those limits or pictured as a greater version of creation.

This verse also teaches restraint. When something about Allah is beyond our knowledge, we remain with the clear revelation rather than inventing an image or comparison.

Let Tawhid Shape Daily Worship

Belief in Allah’s oneness should appear in practice. Direct worship to Him alone, avoid showing devotion for praise, and ask Him for help while taking responsible means. When fear, hope, gratitude, and love are centred on Allah, daily choices gain clearer purpose.

Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas attentively and pause over each statement. Teach its meaning to children in simple language without turning the lesson into abstract argument.

Conclusion

Surah Al-Ikhlas teaches that Allah is One, the Sustainer needed by all, without offspring or birth, and beyond every comparison. These four verses protect belief from confusion and guide worship toward sincerity. Knowing Allah through His revelation helps the heart depend on Him alone.
