Characteristics Of The True Believers

“who believe in the unseen,1 establish prayer, and donate from what We have provided for them,

and who believe in what has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺1 and what was revealed before you, and have sure faith in the Hereafter.

It is they who are ˹truly˺ guided by their Lord, and it is they who will be successful.”

Reference : Al Quran (2 : 3,4,5)

Here’s a  tafsir of the verse with clear headings.

1. Belief in the Unseen (يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ)

Belief in the unseen implies trust in all matters beyond physical perception—such as Allah, angels, revelation, the Last Day, divine decree, Paradise, and Hell. As Imam al-Ṭabarī notes, true faith includes trust by heart, tongue, and actions ([Tumblr][1]).

2. Establishing Prayer (وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ)

“Establishing prayer” means performing all obligatory, necessary, and even voluntary prayers with consistency, humility, and devotion. Tafsīr Ma‘ārif emphasizes correct posture and spiritual focus, not mere ritual ([Quran.com][2]).

3. Spending from What Allah Has Provided (وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ)

Spending (infāq) encompasses every form of charity—obligatory (zakāh), recommended (wājib), and voluntary (nafl). It reflects recognition that all sustenance is a trust from Allah, and sharing it is an act of gratitude and obedience ([Quran.com][2]).

4.Belief in Revealed Scriptures (وَيُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ)

Believers affirm what was sent to Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and prior revelations (Tawrah, Injeel, Zabūr), accepting all without distinction. This unity in belief is essential, and certainty (yāqīn) in revelation is foundational for faith ([Verse By Verse Qur’an Study Circle][3]).

5. Certainty in the Hereafter (وَبِالْآخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ)

Yaqīn denotes absolute conviction in life after death, the Day of Judgment, and eternal recompense. This unmatched assurance fuels righteous deeds and shapes a believer’s worldview ([Verse By Verse Qur’an Study Circle][3], [explainmequran.blogspot.com][4]).

6. They Are Truly Guided & Successful (أُولَـئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَأُولَـئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ)

Because they embody these six qualities, they are on true guidance (“hudā”) from their Lord and are the mufliḥūn—successful both in this world and in the Hereafter. Their success is likened to a farmer’s harvest after sustained effort ([Verse By Verse Qur’an Study Circle][3]).

These qualities define the *muttaqīn* (God‑conscious): spiritually aware, devoted, generous, and steadfast. They hold a central place in Islamic guidance and are promised true success.
