Humility is not pretending that Allah has given us no abilities. It is recognising that every ability is a trust, every good deed needs sincerity, and only Allah fully knows the condition of a person’s heart. Quran 53:32 warns believers against falsely elevating themselves and reminds them that Allah knows who is truly mindful of Him.
Let Allah Judge True Righteousness
Surah An-Najm 53:32 describes those who avoid major sins and shameful deeds, while also reminding people of Allah’s vast forgiveness. The verse then says: “So do not falsely elevate yourselves. He knows best who is truly righteous.”
This guidance protects a believer from treating personal worship, knowledge, family background, or public reputation as proof of superiority. People see a limited part of our lives. Allah knows our beginnings, weaknesses, intentions, private choices, and need for forgiveness.
Distinguish Gratitude From Self-Praise
A Muslim may acknowledge a skill or successful effort when there is a useful reason, such as accepting responsibility or explaining experience. The danger begins when the achievement is used to seek admiration, belittle others, or create an image of personal purity.
Express gratitude by naming Allah’s favour, recognising the help of others, and using the ability responsibly. Gratitude directs attention toward the gift and its duty; self-praise turns attention toward status.
Remember Your Need for Forgiveness
The verse joins a warning against self-elevation with the breadth of Allah’s forgiveness. This keeps humility connected to hope. A believer avoids major wrongdoing, repents after mistakes, and continues improving without claiming to have reached perfection.
Regular self-review can reveal hidden pride. Ask whether you become upset when another person receives praise, whether you mention good deeds unnecessarily, or whether you dismiss advice because of the person giving it.
Accept Correction Without Defensiveness
Humility makes correction easier to hear. Listen to the specific concern, check it honestly, and separate useful advice from the discomfort of receiving it. If the criticism is mistaken, clarify calmly without treating the other person with contempt.
An apology does not erase every good quality. It shows that a person values truth more than appearing flawless. When harm has occurred, correct the action and repair what can be repaired.
Avoid Ranking Hearts and People
Do not assume that visible success makes one person better before Allah than someone whose struggles are hidden. Encourage good without claiming certainty about another person’s inner standing. Correct conduct when necessary, but leave final judgment of righteousness to Allah.
In conversation and online, avoid presenting ordinary differences as evidence that one group of Muslims is automatically more sincere than another. Speak about verified actions and principles rather than claiming knowledge of hearts.
Build Quiet Habits of Humility
Thank people who helped you. Share credit accurately. Perform some good deeds without announcing them. Learn from people younger or less experienced than you. Ask Allah for acceptance, and let improved conduct carry more weight than repeated claims about yourself.
Conclusion
Quran 53:32 teaches believers not to falsely elevate themselves because Allah knows best who is truly righteous. Gratitude, repentance, honest self-review, calm acceptance of correction, and respect for others help sincere humility grow. The goal is not to look pure before people, but to keep returning to Allah with truthful effort.
