Keeping Earnings Lawful Supports Pure Charity and Sincere Supplication

Keeping Earnings Lawful Supports Pure Charity and Sincere Supplication

Muslims often think carefully about how money is spent, but Islam also asks us to examine how it is earned and what supports our daily life. Lawful earnings are connected to worship, charity, food, clothing, family provision, and the sincerity with which a believer turns to Allah.

Allah Accepts What Is Good

In Sahih Muslim 1015, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches that Allah is Good and accepts only what is good. The hadith recalls commands given to messengers and believers to consume good things and do righteous deeds. It then describes a traveller who raises his hands in supplication while his food, drink, clothing, and nourishment are unlawful, and asks how his supplication could be accepted.

This is a serious reminder, not a reason to despair. It calls the believer to bring earning, consuming, giving, and praying into one honest pattern of obedience.

Examine the Source, Not Only the Amount

A large income is not automatically better, and a modest income is not shameful. The first question is whether the work and transaction are lawful and honest. Review the product, service, contract, commission, and method of payment. Refuse fraud, theft, bribery, concealed interest, false claims, and income produced by violating another person’s rights.

Complex employment or business questions may require a qualified scholar and a competent financial or legal professional. Present the real details rather than seeking a convenient answer based on an incomplete description.

Keep Charity Connected to Honest Earnings

Giving money does not transform an unlawful source into a pure one. Charity should come from sound ownership and honest earning. Before donating, correct unpaid wages, customer refunds, debts, or property that belongs to someone else. Returning a person’s right is different from voluntary charity.

When wealth is lawfully earned, even a small gift can be offered with a clear conscience and sincere hope. Choose trustworthy recipients, protect dignity, and do not use generosity to advertise yourself or conceal continuing wrongdoing.

Support Supplication With Responsible Change

The traveller in the hadith shows outward signs of need and raises his hands to Allah, yet unlawful nourishment stands as a grave obstacle. A believer should therefore pair dua with repentance and practical correction. Stop the prohibited source, seek forgiveness, return rights, and build a lawful alternative as responsibly as possible.

Do not claim that every delayed answer to dua proves unlawful income; revelation does not give us permission to judge another person’s hidden condition that way. Use the hadith for personal accountability and sincere reform, not for humiliating people facing hardship.

Create a Lawful-Earnings Review

List each income source and ask what is being sold, promised, or rewarded. Check contracts, deductions, commissions, expense claims, and ownership of materials or data. Separate personal and business funds. Keep receipts and correct overpayments promptly.

If past income raises a genuine concern, do not guess alone or delay indefinitely. Gather accurate records and ask a trustworthy qualified scholar about the specific case. Where another person’s legal rights are involved, obtain appropriate professional advice as well.

Conclusion

Sahih Muslim 1015 joins pure earnings, righteous action, charity, and supplication. A Muslim protects this connection by choosing lawful work, describing transactions honestly, returning people’s rights, correcting doubtful practices, and giving from wealth that is truly owned. Let every payment received and every donation offered support a life of sincere worship.
