Facing Loss Without Despair and Blessings Without Pride or Boasting

Facing Loss Without Despair and Blessings Without Pride or Boasting

Life changes between loss and gain, disappointment and relief, closed doors and unexpected blessings. The heart can become crushed by what has passed or proud because of what has arrived. Quran 57:22–23 places both experiences within Allah’s knowledge and decree, teaching believers to meet changing circumstances with patience, gratitude, and humility.

Calamity and Blessing Are Within Allah’s Knowledge

Quran 57:22 states that no calamity or blessing occurs on earth or within people without being written in a Record before Allah brings it into being. The next verse explains the lesson: “so that you neither grieve over what you have missed nor boast over what He has granted you.”

This guidance steadies the heart. What reaches us is not outside Allah’s knowledge, and what we receive is not proof of personal superiority.

The Verse Does Not Forbid Natural Grief

Sadness after bereavement, illness, disappointment, or separation is part of human experience. The verse does not demand emotional numbness or blame a person for tears. It warns against grief that destroys hope, rejects Allah’s wisdom, or traps a person so completely that necessary responsibilities and help are abandoned.

Allow time to process loss. Make dua, speak with trustworthy people, maintain basic worship and care, and seek qualified support when grief remains intense or daily functioning becomes difficult.

Separate the Event From Your Entire Identity

A failed application, lost possession, ended plan, or missed opportunity is one event; it is not the full measure of a person’s worth or future. Describe what happened accurately without turning it into statements such as “nothing ever works” or “my life has no good.”

Ask what remains within your responsibility. You may need to learn, apologise, rebuild, revise a plan, or patiently accept what cannot be changed.

Receive Blessings With Gratitude Instead of Boasting

Success may come through effort, but ability, opportunity, health, guidance, and results remain gifts from Allah. Say alhamdulillah sincerely, fulfil any duty connected to the blessing, and avoid language that makes others feel inferior.

Share good news with appropriate people without exaggeration or constant display. A blessing is protected through gratitude, responsible use, and humility—not by turning it into a measure of superiority.

Do Not Compare Private Pain With Public Success

Online posts often show achievements without showing debt, delay, sacrifice, fear, or failure. Comparing another person’s selected moment with your full life can deepen grief and envy. Reduce exposure when it harms the heart, and return attention to your own duties and blessings.

Likewise, do not use your success to lecture someone who is suffering. Listen before advising and offer practical help without claiming that every outcome is simple.

Make a Balanced Review After Loss or Gain

After a setback, identify what was beyond your control and what can be improved. After success, identify who helped, what responsibilities now follow, and where gratitude should appear in action. Both reviews protect the heart from extremes.

Balance does not mean passivity. A believer can grieve and still rebuild, celebrate and still remain humble, plan carefully and still trust Allah’s decree.

Support Others Without Empty Explanations

Do not use the decree of Allah to dismiss another person’s pain. Avoid saying that someone should simply stop grieving or that every hardship has an obvious reason. Offer presence, food, transport, help with tasks, patient listening, and sincere dua.

If a person speaks about self-harm, cannot function, or is unsafe, seek immediate qualified help and contact local emergency or crisis support where necessary.

Conclusion

Quran 57:22–23 teaches that calamity and blessing occur within Allah’s knowledge, helping believers avoid destructive despair over what has passed and arrogant boasting over what has arrived. Natural grief deserves patience and care, while success calls for gratitude and humility. By reviewing circumstances honestly, taking responsible action, limiting harmful comparison, and supporting others gently, Muslims can remain steady through both loss and gain.
