Knowledge in Islam is not meant to produce pride, argument, or a sense of superiority. Useful knowledge helps a believer recognise Allah’s power, notice the signs within creation, and become more humble in worship and conduct. The Quran connects genuine knowledge with reverent awe of Allah.
Knowledge That Leads to Awe
Allah says: “just as people, living beings, and cattle are of various colours as well. Of all of Allah’s servants, only the knowledgeable ˹of His might˺ are ˹truly˺ in awe of Him. Allah is indeed Almighty, All-Forgiving” (Quran 35:28).
The verse appears within a passage that calls attention to rain, fruits, mountains, people, animals, and their varied colours. Observing creation carefully should not end with facts alone. It should lead the heart to recognise the greatness of the Creator and the limits of human knowledge.
Useful Learning Makes the Heart Humble
A person may collect information yet remain careless in character. Quran 35:28 gives a higher measure: knowledge should deepen awe of Allah. As understanding grows, the believer becomes more aware of responsibility, more careful about claims, and less eager to speak without evidence.
Humility does not mean hiding beneficial knowledge or refusing to learn confidently. It means remembering that every ability to read, understand, observe, and teach is a gift from Allah. A humble learner can say, “I do not know,” correct a mistake, and appreciate what others understand.
Observe Creation with Faith and Care
The diversity mentioned in the verse invites reflection. Notice the colours of mountains, plants, people, birds, and animals. Study the order and variety of the world without turning observation into careless religious claims. Reliable learning and honest reflection can strengthen wonder and gratitude.
Respect for creation should also influence behaviour. Avoid waste, cruelty, and needless damage. Use natural resources responsibly and treat living beings with mercy. Reflection becomes meaningful when it improves the way we act.
Choose Knowledge That Benefits
Begin with the Quran, authentic Sunnah, essential worship, lawful and unlawful conduct, and the responsibilities closest to you. Learn from reliable teachers and verified sources. When reading online, check the original reference instead of trusting an attractive quotation or repeated claim.
Beneficial worldly knowledge also supports responsible life. Medicine, education, technology, agriculture, language, and skilled work can serve people when pursued lawfully and used with sound character. The important question is not only what we know, but what our knowledge helps us become and do.
Turn Learning into Worship and Character
After learning something, identify one action. A lesson about prayer should improve prayer. Learning about honesty should correct speech and transactions. Studying Allah’s creation should increase praise, gratitude, and careful stewardship. Knowledge becomes fruitful when it reaches the heart and guides the limbs.
Review regularly and teach with gentleness. Do not overwhelm people, shame beginners, or use religious knowledge to win every disagreement. Explain what is verified, distinguish fact from opinion, and remain open to correction.
Conclusion
Quran 35:28 teaches that true knowledge of Allah’s might produces awe. The more believers learn from revelation and reflect on creation, the more humble, careful, and responsible they should become. By seeking reliable knowledge, admitting limits, and acting on what we learn, study becomes a path toward reverence and better character.
